Al displayed an interest in religion from early childhood. He read his first sermon at the age of four. The boy was intelligent and very mature. When he was 9, his father left his wife, Ada, to live with Sharpton’s half-sister. The family experienced tough times during this period, and the mother of the future activist had to work harder. She got a job as a maid, but the earnings were not enough. That is why they had to obtain welfare and move to the most dangerous neighborhood in Brooklyn, Brownsville. Life amid crime and injustice had a strong impact on the boy’s outlook.

Sharpton received education at Samuel J. Tilden High School in his native borough. If it was not for external circumstances, he would have successfully graduated from Brooklyn College, where he studied for only two years. He began his political career in his freshman year. In 1972, he was appointed youth director for the presidential campaign of Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman in Congress. She stood for the commons, and Sharpton was at the right time.

Losing for the highest purpose

Sharpton has always been drawn to politics. He ran for office several times but kept losing. In 1988, 1992, and 1994, he attempted to join the United States Senate in New York. In 1997, he wanted to become the mayor of NY, and in 2004 Al participated in the presidential election race. Due to his social activism, he often attracted attention from the press. However, journalists always put him in a bad light. They did not miss the opportunity to mock his losses in the political arena. Sharpton himself assured that he did not plan to win. His main goal was to stir public interest and raise a crucial issue.

Although Sharpton did not hold any political office, many politicians respected him. His opinions and views were always neutral, which is why many people deferred to him. During his time as a public activist, he always protected the rights of African Americans and residents of Brooklyn. At the same time, Alfred made a statement about Obama, saying that his skin color was not a primary factor to him. If the politician is good, then the rest doesn’t matter. Supporting someone just because he is also black is not about Sharpton.

Social position

Al Sharpton was involved in many things during his life. He was present at every sensational and significant event. He was always with the people.

Sharpton spoke very emphatically on the issue of same-sex marriage and LGBT representatives. He urged society to stop discussing people’s private lives. In his opinion, doubting the same-sex marriage is the same as saying whether interracial marriage is right or wrong. Among other things, Sharpton fiercely fought homophobia and even organized a mass movement to eradicate it. Mostly he tried to change this situation in the black church.

Since 2014, Sharpton has promoted criminal justice reform. He was particularly concerned that the majority of prisoners in the United States were African Americans. He also opposed sponsoring a monument to Thomas Jefferson because this president was a slave trader. Alfred said that taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for the preservation of his monument. Men like Jefferson are to be remembered but not honored.

Throughout his life, Sharpton held dozens of rallies and protests. In 1984, Bernhard Goetz shot and killed four black men on the second subway train. Goetz later claimed that they were trying to rob him. Sharpton reacted quickly and organized a protest against the weak criminal process. He was convinced there were racist views involved in this case, but the court ruled that it was an aborted robbery attempt.

In 1986, three African Americans were attacked by an aggressive group of white men in Queens. The men repelled the assailants, and as a result, one of them was hit by a car and died. A week after, Sharpton held a large-scale protest in the area of the incident. 1,200 people joined him on the streets of the borough. This case gained national publicity thanks to Sharpton’s unwavering stance.

Al spent most of his growing-up years in Brooklyn’s neighborhood Bensonhurst. In 1989, he did not stay away when in this district, a group of Italian-American young men attacked four African-American teenagers and killed one of them. The protest in Bensonhurst was one of the loudest. In addition to publicity, Sharpton could attract black lawyers to the case. When the verdicts on this case began to be passed in the 90s, he was also there. All judgmenets were too lenient and unfair. This Sharpton was not liked, as he didn’t let anyone get away with anything.

In 1999, Sharpton raised awareness about the death of Amadou Diallo. He was shot dead by a New York police officer. Sharpton assured everyone that racial injustice and racism were the reason for this tragedy. He later helped the family of the deceased to obtain financial compensation from the city.

God, death and marriage

Sharpton was a Pentecostal bishop. He was interested in faith from an early age and even was ordained at the age of ten. However, in the 1990s, he changed his religion and became a Baptist continuing his path as a Baptist priest. Using his proactive stance, Sharpton advocated not only for the rights of African Americans but also for his religious beliefs. He took every opportunity to argue with someone and prove his faith.

Al Sharpton had as many supporters as enemies. In 1991, during a protest in Bensonhurst, he miraculously escaped serious injury that could have been fatal. Michael Riccardi stabbed him in the chest, but the blow was not that heavy because Riccardi was drunk. He was immediately detained. Interestingly, Sharpton himself asked the judge to remit the sentence, but the attacker got 15 years.

Sharpton’s attitude on the matter was odd to some. He asked for mitigation for Riccardi but then filed suit against New York. The police were present at the protest, and Sharpton was sure they poorly performed their duties, for if they had worked better, none of this would have happened. In 2003, he was successful in proving his case and was awarded $200,000 compensation.

Sharpton’s failed presidential campaign led to heavy debts. In 2004, the federal government granted him $100,000 for his campaign under the condition that Sharpton would pay it back. As of 2005, his campaign was still in debt of nearly $480,000, and Sharpton himself owed almost $150,000. That is why his election campaign received a 285,000 dollars fine. As a result, he refused to run for office in 2008.

Sharpton has two children. Many people liked to discuss his personal life. In 1971 while touring with James Brown, he met his future wife. They got married in 1980 and lived together for 24 years. In 2013, the media scavenged his relationship with his new girlfriend, 35-year-old Aisha McShaw. McShaw called herself a personal stylist. But it became clear that Sharpton, still married to his second wife, was having an affair.

Throughout the history of the United States and New York, there were many renowned politicians with extraordinary life stories.
